In the United States, among children, from birth to age 19, more than 18,000 cases of cancer are diagnosed each year.
This year, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells, will be diagnosed in about 3,000 U.S. children, making it the most common pediatric cancer.
Childhood cancer survival rates in the United States have increased from less than 20 percent in the 1960s to almost 80 percent today.
